About Us

The Federal University of Technology, Akure was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in September 1981. The first set of students was admitted into the first year (100 level) of the Bachelor’s degree programmes in the 1982/83 academic session. The Department was founded in 1982 as Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering (EMM) as one of the foundation Departments within the School of Earth and Mineral Sciences (SEMS) of the University. Consequent upon the creation of School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET) in 1988, the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering (EMM) was split into Department of Mining Engineering (MNE) and Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (MME) and moved to SEET with the creation of additional four Engineering Departments. In 2003, the Department of Mining Engineering was adopted by a newly created School of Mines and Earth Sciences (SMES). However, because of the emphasis that Departments should domicile in their parent professional Schools, the Department of Mining Engineering was reinstated to SEET in 2005.

The Department was established to train mining engineers and equip them with appropriate knowledge and skill required for the operation of a vibrant mineral industry which can serve as a vehicle for rapid transformation of the Nigerian economy. A product of the programme should be able to provide technical services in all aspects of mineral engineering. The category of engineers can function as Mining Engineers in the public and private sectors including Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, state and private mining companies, oil industry, mineral processing establishments, mining equipment and machinery and mineral commodities/marketing companies, consulting services as well as the academia.

The programme of the Department is, therefore, designed to give students the required academic and practical background in areas of Surface Mining, Underground Mining, Rock Mechanics, Mine Environment and Safety, Mine Management and Mineral Economics, Mineral Processing and Mine Surveying and Photogrammetry.
